Review - The Stylus Photo R3000 A3+ Printer

Half way between the R2800 vs. Epson Stylus Pro 3880.

The Epson R 3000 A3 plus (13-inch) ink jet printer is now released in Australia uses Nine colour cartridges (all installed) it’s the next logical step up from the Stylus Photo R2880 as it was designed for smoother colours and better highlight/shadow detail.

It's all in the Ink

The R3000 with Epson's UltraChrome K3 Ink (with Vivid Magenta) now has the bonus of automatically swapping the black cartridges when changing from glossy to matte papers. Both black cartridges are on board and can if set to, swap over automatically and takes about 2-3 1/2 min depending on which cartridges are being changed over, 1-3ml of ink is used during the conversion.

Intelligent High-Capacity Ink System:

Nine individual 25.9 ml ink cartridges with pressurized ink technology ensures reliable ink delivery at all print speeds. The R3000 has about 1/3 the ink capacity per cartridge of the 17 inch Epson Stylus Pro 3880 but over twice the 11.4 ml cartridge capacity of the R2880. Resolution Ink droplet size has been reduced 33% which greatly increases print resolution, variable Droplet Technology can produce up to 3 different droplet sizes per line.

This is the smallest drop size by Epson yet and will benefit gradients / transitions. Ink capacity of is over twice previous cartridges @ 25.9 ml and they are no longer housed on the print carriage.

Think of it as a CIS system without all the trouble. Paper rolls are supported as per previous models; however the Epson R-3000 still doesn't cut the paper. You can also print on DVDs with no paper loaded via a holder you place in the feed tray.

Top of the range print quality If you've used an R2880 you’ll be right at home with the Epson interface for best print quality we found as expected the print speed decreases and the output was equal to or (depending on the image) better than the best print you've seen from a R2880 which was already impressive.

If you’re happy with your R2880 the only reason you may want to upgrade is the combination of larger cartridges and no more swapping blacks depending on the paper. The R3000 prints are technically better we think you’ll only notice this on occasions or side by side.

If this is your first professional A3+ printer you’ll be making a wise choice paying a little more, especially in a production environment. The Stylus Photo R3000 seems targeted at professional and amateur photographers and artists, it easily fills the gap between the Epson R2880 Printer and R3880 both in terms of price and performance yet the print quality is as good as it gets this side of $5000.
